Interesting view, I didn't realise it was because of pervs :wow: but perhaps it happens more often than I thought.

I guess it also depends on who the person is wanting to draw my character. If its friends then thats fine. For example, a while ago, somebody drew my friend's OC on here, without asking. Now this person did this a lot, drawing her friends ocs as gifts and to surprise them, which is sweet. But with this particular character, you could tell she hadn't been drawn in a good light, and seemed to maybe verge on bullying, with this oc angry at my friend's oc (these two girls both had a love interest for the same character.) Now maybe she didn't mean it in a bad way, but it did seem a little mean. Maybe she felt too close to my bud, which my bud didn't feel.

Might be! Artists have reasons for not having others draw their characters (which is understandable) ^^

Sorry to hear your friend had to deal with that :/ I've heard of people drawing stuff as a way to get back at another person or make them uncomfortable by using their characters.

 Personally, I'm all for people drawing others' characters as gifts or even as a surprise at a time they don't expect, but I think it should be someone you are good friends with and talk with a lot. Not like in the case I mentioned, where the friendship wasn't exactly reciprocated.

It's horrible. :( My friend had worse than what that certain user did though, and I reported the nasty pic but not sure if it was removed. I wonder if its done in a nasty way, could the original artist report it as theft, seeing as their characters have been used without permission?

Oh yes definitely. Trying to force a friendship isn't good and usually becomes an uncomfortable/awkward situation. :(

That's not okay...ugh I hope your friend is alright. It's possible the original artist could report it as misrepresentation or misuse of an intellectual property. I do know a little about copyright law and stuff but I'm not entirely sure on that. Characters are kind of a gray area unfortunately in that they can be trademarked but not actually copyrighted I believe. I would need to brush up on this though :O
Either way it's a scuzzy thing for the person to do to someone's personal character.

Definitely. Especailly when said person only wants you for free stuff or as was the case with me, rp. I had to leave this friend in the end.

Thanks, she is alright. And that is very confusing about characters, I wonder if they can be legally copyrighted? Yes, its scary what someone's hate for someone else can make them do, even for something small. And sadly, nothing usually comes off reporting said people as they haven't for example sent threats. Which makes me think these person are sly and cunning, they choose to do something which they hope wont' be seen as anything bad...those people still haven't been kicked off here.

Oml I feel you. I had a 'friend' that basically used me for free art...ugh..

Kinda. It's sorta tricky but there is a way. I think characters have to be attached to some sort of brand/company and/or media such as a movie, TV, book, etc. Copyright doesn't protect ideas, only when its used in some sort of medium. That also makes it hard to report unfortunately.
Still, it's frowned upon to steal/misuse someone's character and people can get a lot of backlash for it (usually if it's a well known character).
The best thing to do is not to engage these types of people and block them. B/c if they pursue you it becomes harassment and that can definitely be reported.

:( That's horrible. Tbh though I too was like that, but it was mostly at the beginning when I didn't really know how this site worked and what it was like for the artists...being here for a while though I know what its like so I don't ask for free art, unless of course someone writes a journal that theyre doing requests, but even then i'll only ask if I know the artist a bit. But even then I don't like to burden people. Of course, if i'm declined then its no problem. Ive seen so many on here who get butthurt if their request is declined, or they'll try to guilt trip the artist. I guess these people have taught me how not to be, so now unless I know the artist is ok to do requests and is a friend of mine, only then will I ask, but I don't do even do that now.

I will do trades, collaborations or look for artists who do point commissions and always mention them in my journal. As someone who used to do freelance translation, I couldn't work for free unless its for family or very close friends. A friend of mine said she gets asked for free art from businesses, even her dentist! The most annoying this is they say they cant pay her...This astounds me a lot more than people on here asking for free stuff, because you'd expect people with businesses to be mature adults and understand that you need money for jobs, even simple sketches.

I hope the person left you alone.

Wow, that's quite complicated in regards to characters....I get the feeling that da don't always take the bullying seriously though, and I do not agree with their 'tracing is ok' policy. I feel it just encourages theft...

Use the thumb code located near the bottom of the deviation (after all the other junk) and paste it wherever you'd like on DeviantART. prntscr.com/cjhutb
